Today was a big day for John. He had his 2 month shots :( Poor little guy did much better than I thought he would. He only cried for about a minute or so then whimpered for about another minute or two while I swaddled him and then he fell asleep and took about a 2 hour nap. I, thankfully, did not see him actually receive the shots because while the two nurses were wiping down his little thighs with the alcohol wipes Nathan called! Talk about awesome timing. So since I had my mom tag along I was able to answer my phone and miss seeing John gets his shots. Which, was a blessing because I know I would've been crying right along side of him! My stomach was in knots for him because he was SO happy before his appointment. He was smiling and talking to the nurse who was giving him the oral medication for Rotavirus. It was adorable.
However, John has not really been interested in eating since he had his appointment. I got him to eat for maybe 10 or so minutes at around 1:30pm. Then about 2.5 hours later I tried getting him to eat again & I succeeded for about 7 minutes but then he needed his diaper changed & all he did was scream after that. He screamed for probably a good 15 minutes until he fell asleep. Then around 6:30pm I tried to feed him to no avail. It's now 9:20pm... I'm a little worried that he'll get dehydrated. If he's not sleeping, he's screaming :( I know that the shots make babies sleepy as well as have a decreased appetite but I didn't think his appetite would go away altogether today. I really hope he decides to eat soon because this is making me nervous!
Anyway, John's stats are:
Head Circumference- 15.35 inches ----- 23rd Percentile
Length: 23 1/4 inches ----- 56th Percentile
Weight: 13 pounds ----- 78th Percentile
At his 1 month appointment he was 21.5 inches and he weighed 10 lbs. His head circumference was 14.76 inches or something close to that. He really is growing quite a bit and it's so crazy!! I can't believe how fast its happening. Clearly, he's a little chunk :) It's empowering to know that it is all courtesy of my breast milk haha. It's "awesome stuff" according to the pediatrician. And to think I was so worried all throughout my pregnancy that I wouldn't be able to supply him with enough milk. Silly thought now :)

You can always call your hospital's mother/baby unit...they are GREAT at answering questions about little babies! Plus those nurses always know the best tricks, and they're there 24/7 so you can call anytime!
ReplyDeleteOh, good idea!! I never even thought about the hospital line. I knew the pediatricians office was closed so I thought I was just out of luck! His next dose of Tylenol is in 45 minutes so I'm going to try to feed him then. I noticed earlier today that hes not comfortable nursing because being on his side hurts his thigh closest to me so I've been pumping and trying to bottle feed him but he just doesn't seem interested. I think if he's not interested in the bottle I'm going to try to syringe feed him the breast milk and then if that doesn't work I will call. I always feel so dumb whenever I have to call- like I should know how to take care of him, you know? Anyway, thanks for the advice because I had completely spaced the hospital line :)
DeleteI hope John's doing better today! With Derek, after his first few rounds of shots, he didn't eat too and it ended up being because he was in pain. I had to find a funky position to nurse him. Although you say he's not taking a bottle either... hmmm... As for doctor/nurse lines I have loved my insurance's nurses line. I don't know if all insurances have this, but you might check into it. Ours is 24/7 and they're fabulous.
ReplyDeleteYes, John is doing much better today! I ended up getting him to eat around midnight and hes been eating every three hours since then thank goodness! And he's nursing again today which is a huge relief. I have no idea if our insurance has a nurse line... I'll have to look into that for future instances for sure :)
