This morning I had my glucose tolerance test bright & early at 8am. Here in the good old land of Germany, there is no 1 hr screen & if you fail you do a 3 hr test like in the States. They just get straight down to business & compromise in the middle with one 2 hr test that you either pass or fail.
I did not get a test with John. We PCS'd to Germany last year when I was 25 weeks pregnant with him. By the time we got our Tricare switched to Tricare Overseas Europe & the referrals in place to be seen by an OB, I was 29 weeks. A few of my friends were expecting back home & they all mentioned this AWFUL glucose test that they were having at around this point in their pregnancies. So, I called the office & asked about this test & whoever answered the phone told me they monitor urine at every appointment & if there's cause for concern then they go ahead with the test. I thought that was pretty cool that they didn't put you through a test if you didn't need it.
Apparently, whoever told me that was dead wrong. I was told that every woman gets a glucose test for every pregnancy no matter what. Big oops on their part I suppose. So, I didn't get out of it this time. My instructions were to eat plenty of carbs for three days prior to the test & that I couldn't have anything to eat or to drink after 8pm the night before the test. Eating, not a problem. Nothing to drink??? I clarified if water was okay & was told nothing, not even water- a complete fast was necessary. I followed that as best as I could. I had to take my Zoloft, so I drank some water but just enough to get it down.
I honestly don't know why women complain about the drink?? Maybe it's different over here or something. I was expecting this syrupy nasty stuff that would be hard to stomach. What I got looked like a cranberry/grape juice drink. It was the consistency of juice & tasted like really sweet cranberry juice. It smelled a little funky so I just didn't breathe while I drank it- all 12 ounces. They had it chilled & poured it in a glass & everything for me. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I was dizzy for about a half hour after drinking because of the huge sugar rush. But, that's to be expected. Anyway, while I was drinking, they hooked me up to a non stress test to monitor the little lady. You could tell when the drink hit my system because her heart rate shot up from 138 to the 170's & my stomach was moving & bouncing ha. After 30 minutes they sent me to the waiting room where I waited the rest of the time to get the last 2 draws of blood.
They took blood three times; once before the drink, one hour after the drink & then an hour after that. I passed with flying colors, which was nice to hear. I really didn't want to worry about GD on top of having Preeclampsia.
We're still waiting to hear what my blood test results from my appointment on Monday are. They took a full screen for the Preeclampsia, so needless to say, my right arm is really sore from having so much blood taken from it this week... I guess my left arm has crappy veins.
Well that's about all the news I have on this pregnancy. I have a feeling that this little girl will come early. I can feel my body preparing. My ligaments are all super loose already; my left hip constantly pops in & out of place. And lately whenever I stand up I feel like her head is just going to pop out. I didn't feel these things until about 35 weeks with John, who was born at 38 weeks & 3 days. Hopefully she stays in until 37 weeks, but I know she'll be here before her due date.
